Job Description

Job Summary/Purpose

The Lighting Supervisor for resident productions is responsible for the coordination and implementation of lighting systems and lighting staff of The Studio Theatre. This includes operations, training, budgeting, maintenance, and general direction of the department.

The start date range for this position is July 25-August 4, 2025.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Generate, update, implement, and set standards in relation to documents pertaining to the operation of the lighting department, including but not limited to inventories, lighting plots, Lightwright paperwork, hang cards, operations manuals.
  • Set and maintain standards regarding lighting equipment and consumables inventory, storage, installation, organization, cleaning, etc. including ongoing preventative maintenance and repairs for systems and equipment.
  • Estimate costs and track expenses for upcoming shows and seasons of shows to enable production management to complete their work effectively and on time.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with guest artists.
  • Collaborate with other departments to facilitate a smooth changeover process.
  • Troubleshoot systems as needed.
  • Train others in the proper operation of lighting equipment which includes conventional fixtures, ETC consoles, and intelligent lighting such as moving lights, I-Cues, and LED tape.
  • Prepare, organize, and lead lighting/electrics calls, including hang, strike, and focus at The Studio Theatre.
  • Support other departments’ load-ins and strikes, including but not limited to scenic, audiovisual, and lighting calls as needed at The Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center and The Studio Theatre Tierra del Sol.
  • Stay on top of industry trends and developments to keep The Studio on the cutting edge of new lighting technologies and techniques.
  • Coordinate the design and fabrication of lighting solutions as needed within The Studio Theatre.
  • Understand and participate in safety and risk management practices.
  • Communicate needs and act as liaison for contracted designers for upcoming and current productions.
  • Attend production and other show related meetings, tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and previews.
  • Manage preparation and installation of lighting specifications including but not limited to prepping gels and accessories, cabling and circuits, atmospherics, house and work lights, running blues, cue lights, ASL light, and consoles.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or six or more years’ experience in, theatrical lighting or related field.
  • 2-3 years of leadership experience preferred.
  • Flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Prompt and regular attendance is a requirement of this position.
  • Willingness to attend work calls in lighting, carpentry, and audiovisual as needed.
  • Highly proficient in ETC Eos family consoles, Vectorworks, patching, programming, networking (ETC Net3 Concert experience is a plus), etc.
  • Highly proficient in working with a variety of intelligent and practical lighting and effects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a Microsoft Office365 ecosystem.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with supervisors, peers, and internal and external clients.
  • Ability to foster a safe, humane, collaborative, organized, respectful, and energized work environment with a positive attitude and a sense of humor.
  • Understanding of theatre terminology and technical standards
  • Work with intermediate mathematical concepts.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands

  • A broad range of physical movement, including prolonged sitting, standing, climbing ladders, reaching, twisting and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
  • Grasping and gripping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in operating equipment, using tools and preparing written material.
  • Working at a height exceeding 50 feet with required fall protection equipment and mitigations (catwalks, personnel/equipment lifts, etc.)
  • Near and far vision in reading, operating equipment, and viewing productions.
  • The need to be able to lift, drag, and/or push materials weighing up to 50 pounds using appropriate tools
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is moderately exposed to moving mechanical parts and hazards. There is a moderate level of noise in the work environment. There are instances when the employee experiences wet or humid conditions, works in high places, experiences fumes – mists-gases and chemical hazards, runs a risk of electrical shock, vibration and burn hazards. The employee will be exposed to theatrical haze, fog, and strobe effects.
